Aftercare
How to care for your new tattoo
Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your new tattoo heals well and stays looking bold for years to come. After getting tattooed, your artist will apply a bandage or protective covering. One common method is using a medical adhesive bandage such as Saniderm or “second skin.” This breathable barrier helps protect the tattoo from bacteria while allowing it to heal. Leave the Saniderm on for the time recommended by your artist (usually a few days), then gently remove it under warm running water, wash the tattoo with mild unscented soap, and allow it to air dry before applying a light layer of unscented lotion if needed. The traditional healing method involves removing the initial bandage after a few hours, gently washing the tattoo with mild unscented soap, and keeping it clean while applying a small amount of unscented lotion several times a day to prevent excessive dryness. During healing, avoid soaking the tattoo, keep it out of direct sunlight, and never pick or scratch the area as it heals. Your artist will provide specific aftercare instructions based on the healing method used, as well as the size, placement, and style of your tattoo.
